Shot List

These are key shots we want to include in our opening sequence as we feel they will suit it well and also give the audience good information on what is going on. The first shot shown is good because it lets the audience know how the film has started off where at this point everything is fine and happy for the person. We also have a good close up of the weapon used by the attacker which is key because it is informing us that a very big thing has occured and that someone is hurt.

Sounds

This sound will need to be used for when our phone goes of in the shot, instead of letting the phone actually ring we want to put it in after during the editing so that it is louder and more clear to the audience

Above is a set of songs that would suit perfectly for our genre and plot of the film. They all would work well for our film due to their high pace but the song that stands out the most is at 1:47, the reason for this is because in the opening sequence we will need a fast pace track for the titles so that by just hearing it they can try to work out what genre this is, the music isn't dark which means its not for a horror so because of its fast pace and the way it sounds  it fits in well with our genre

This soundtrack would work well for our opening sequence as it has got a fast pace to it but also sounds quite mysterious which would tie in perfectly with our film as it is a thriller which contains mystery within it.

Synopsis of our film
Our film is set in the urban areas of England in the town of Sutton. It involves two friends who get involved in an unsuspecting event which leads to an investigation.
It starts of with a young boy trying to call his friend to arrange to meet up, however due to a unfortunate turn of events his friend has been attacked by someone in the upper level of a car park who the audience does not know if they are dead or alive. The person who attacked the boy answers the phone and slowly breathes into it to create tension before hanging it up. The injured boy is left on the floor with a cracked skull whilst the attacker then leaves the scene. After this has happened the boy becomes concerned for his friend and tries to find out where he was last seen.
The police become contacted and an investigation is launched once the body has been found. Now the police have been contacted the police run through CCTV footage in the hope of finding the person who caused the attack and question the boy once he wakes up in hospital from the attack however the boy has sustained heavy brain damaged and doesn’t recall anything that happened that day.
Once the attacker has been identified the boys friend goes looking for her but ends up in trouble himself as she catches him following her and takes him prisoner.  A member of the public however sees this and reports it to the police which leads them to her house where she is confronted. A shoot down then commences where the attacker is shot and the boy escapes with his life but has suffered minor bruising .

Location Research

This location would be good for our opening sequence because it is away from central parts of high streets and a quite location. Thier are back alleys around this area with cars often parked in the area which would be great for when we are trying to hide the body of the character for our sequence and for the shot types we want to use it hides people quite well.

This area would be great for shooting because it is in the middle of a quite area which has plenty of places to keep people hidden and also is well built up which suits the background of the sequence we want to make.
This I think is the best area to shoot overall because it has plenty of room that can be shot in as their is a small park area to the left and also a underground parking area which would suit our thriller perfectly as at nigght time it looks very mysterious and the killer in our film can hide easily.

Audience Research 1

Looking at these resulsts these results on the Questionnaires the most common thing people expect to see in a thriller is a murder. Because of this we will have something similar such as a murder or attack in our opening sequence as this sets up the rest of the film and gives us something to base it on. We also learnt that people expect the setting to be in dirty areas that are quite old or iscolated so because of this we will be useing a car park in Sutton as it will be quite dark in their and also is a very dirty place. People also expect to see weapons in a thriller so we will have one as the murder weapon that will contain clues on who the attacker was.
Also we need to right mood to be given off and when we asked people how they expect to feel they mostly said curios and scared. We feel feeling scared belongs to a horror so instead we will try to engage the audience by makeing them curios and keep the guessing who the attack was.
Also from seeing this the male watches thrillers a lot more so we could assume from this our main target audience we should look at is male as they would be more inclined to see a thriller.

Conventions of your chosen genre

Conventions of the Genre Thriller

Mise en scene
Low key lighting- This type of lighting is used so that it shrouds some of the area in the shot which causes the audience to wounder where they are and also the darkness adds more spook to the setting as it becomes harder for the audience to see what exactly is their and also the darkness can hide lots of things.

The costume the killer will often wear will be most likely dark colours, this is because dark is considered to be a negative colour so they will wear these types to give of a negative atmosphere to the audience whilst you will often see the victim of the genre wearing casual daily clothes as they are not expecting in the film to be taken, finally the clothes the person who is solving the case will often be detective clothing or a suit to give of a high status for the character.

Items in a thriller will often be very similar to a horror such as guns or knives, these items are usually used by the ''bad guy'' in the film to capture his victim whilst the ''good guy'' will often use weapons for justice.

A thriller will often be set in a city within the dark urban areas where you would expect all the crime to happen instead of having it in a exotic location which is quite isolated and you don't expect crime to happen. The urban city areas makes the audience feel as if they can relate to it more not necessarly through personal experience but through seeing news stories of when kidnaping or murders have taken place in the streets.

Characters
You will often have three types of characters in this type of genre, these will include the criminal, victim and the person who would solve what has happened often known as a detective.

The victim will often be played by a women as the director will often  go along with stereo-type views where the women is very weak and innocent and needs a man to come along and save her.

The criminal will often be played as a male because they are see as more dominating figures compared to women and have a high authority.

Finally the detective or the person who solves the problem will be shown quite often as a elderly male as they are seen to have experience in these types of situations and give of a more calming prescience to the audience.

Editing
In thrillers the pace of the cuts will quite often be most likely of a fast pace when action is going on such as the final fight scene  or when the person is being rescued whilst slow paced cuts will be used when the director is trying to build tension at a certain point.

Cinematography
Shot  types commonly used in a thriller will be close ups to show the details of the villian to let the audience see if they have any distinguishing features or to hide out certain parts of a room so the audience are left guessing where abouts the film is being set, establishing shots will be used if the director wants us to know where abouts everything will be happening for eample in a thriller we may have a opening shot of a warehouse or undergournd building which is quite iscolated and finnally medium shots will be used so that the audience can see what types of clothes the characters are wearing and if their is anything important on them.

Sound
With the sound it will often start of very slow paced when it is trying to build suspense for the audience and then slowly building up the pace so we know that somthing big is going to happen such as a fight scene or important to the film, the villian will often speak with a low tone and quite powerful to show his authority over his victim whilst the victim who is often a girl will have a very inocent squeaky voice to show that they are weak.

Your Genre 2

Titles- This opening sequence for this film is very long and contains most of the roles you would expect in the film due to this. We see MGM and Orion at the start of the sequence so we know that they are the two main distributers of the film. Also in the sequence we have the title of the film which has been written in bold capital letters so that it stands out to the audinece. The colours used and font style come of as very dark and serious so we know from seeing this what we should expect the film to be about and can already seeing just the titles that the film will be quite dark and have little happy moments in it. We also have the; casters, music, costume designer, production designer, editor, executive producer, screenplay writer, producer and director shown on the screen, these roles listed are going fro the least important to the most imporant of the film and therefore when the director is shown at the end we expect him to be a big name.

Through seeing the mise en scene we learn that the setting here appears to be a police academy and therefore are aware that this film will be quite serious. The women is wearing simple training clothing and is performing at this academy which tells us because she is not wearing standard police uniform eqipment she may be a new recruit and this filmcould be based around her learning her traits. It also goes agaisnt stereo typical veiws as you expect to see males being used in films like this but they have given a female charecter the main role and also gave her a high status as she is a policeman. The lighting is low key and mist surrounds her at the start which makes her look vunerable and also the darkness suggests that this film will be quite dark a gory unlike a commedy.

The editing of this sequence is very slow paced compared to the one of 7, the most likly reason for this is so that it tried to lure th e audience into a false state because at this point nothing is happening and everything seems quite calm and relaxed yet from seeing the titles we expect to see it being a lot darker but due to the slow pace of the cuts the audience feels more calm at the point.

The music in this opening sequence is very slow paced and we even hear the diegetic sound of bird song in the background, because the non-diegetic and diegetic sound seems so peacful the audience are yet again lead into a false sense of state because from just hearing the music we would expect it to be quite peacful, even when the pace increase it still doesn't sound like somthing from a thriller and instead somthing a lot more calmer.

Long shots and establishing shots are used mainly to let the audience know where abouts the setting is so that they become aware of the surroundings and can try and work out what type of film this is through seeing the area and close ups are also commonly used show the audience who the main charecter is so that they can recognise who it is and see if they have any distinguishing features.

Brief

Breif of my task for making the opening of a film.

Trailers and Opening sequences

Their is a major difference between the opening sequence of a film and a trailer.
A trailer will be composed of different parts of the film almost all the time the best parts to encouarge the targted audience to go out and see it. It will open up with the people who helped make the film such as Dreamworks or Paramont. The trailer will never give you a huge idea of who the main characters are just what the film is about and what happens in it for example a link of a trailer below is found here.

While the opening sequence to a film will have the Title of it and a short brief and close ups of who the main character is. The producers want you to recognise the main character from the start so to do this most of the time he will be the first person you see. Howver before you see the main character you may be given a establishing shot, this is to show the audience where abouts in the world or what planet the film is set on.
